The countdown has begun. On June 19th, 2025, Chronicles of the Wolf launches on Steam and all platforms, inviting players into a haunting world where legend meets reality. Developed by Migami and co-published by PixelHeart and PQube, this metroidvania blends pixel art, historical horror, and fast-paced exploration into an unforgettable journey.

As you prepare to face the darkness, let’s take a look at the bloody legends and mysterious orders that inspired this game.

History as a Weapon: The Real Legends Behind the Game

Chronicles of the Wolf is not just set in a fantasy world—it’s grounded in two of France’s most enduring and chilling myths: The Beast of Gévaudan and the Rose Cross Order. These stories shape both the world design and gameplay philosophy of the adventure that awaits.

The Beast of Gévaudan – Terror in the Countryside

Between 1764 and 1767, a nightmare plagued rural France. A monstrous creature roamed the Gévaudan region, reportedly killing over 100 people. It was not described as a normal wolf, but as something massive, with red fur, unnatural movements, and eyes that hinted at something far more sinister. Eyewitnesses reported it walked like a man, stalked like a hunter, and devoured its victims with terrifying efficiency.

This horror still echoes through French folklore and pop culture today, and Chronicles of the Wolf brings that fear to life.

In the game, the Beast is not just a background myth, it is the ever-present threat. As Mateo Lombardo, you are forced to ask at every turn: “Who is the hunter, and who is the prey?” Boss fights, atmospheric ruins, and a constant sense of dread bring players closer and closer to an inevitable confrontation with the creature.

Will you survive? Or will you become one more forgotten name in a long list of victims?

The Rose Cross Order – Secrets in the Shadows

Mysticism, spiritual enlightenment, and occult knowledge, these are the marks of the Rose Cross Order, a real-world esoteric society shrouded in secrecy for centuries. In Chronicles of the Wolf, their teachings, relics, and rituals serve as a guiding force for your progression.

By mastering ancient knowledge, you will:

  • Unlock powerful relics to aid in combat and exploration
  • Reveal hidden passages and areas inaccessible to ordinary wanderers
  • Discover the deeper layers of the game’s story, told through voiced cutscenes by Robert Belgrade (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night)

The balance between logic and faith, science and myth, becomes a crucial part of the player’s journey.

Day turns to night. Paths shift. Enemies evolve. Every decision feels weighty as you progress through a setting that constantly challenges your resolve.
