The fighting game world has just experienced a major shock. After 31 years at Bandai Namco, Katsuhiro Harada, one of the most influential creators in the industry, has announced his departure, scheduled for the end of 2025.
As the symbolic figure behind the Tekken franchise, he has shaped a legacy that has become essential for millions of players worldwide.

An Exceptional Career at the Heart of Bandai Namco
When Katsuhiro Harada joined Namco in 1994, he was not yet destined to become a game creator. His first role involved promoting arcades, which were booming at the time. Thanks to his energy and field expertise, he quickly stood out by breaking sales records. His dedication earned him recognition from Namco’s president, who opened the door for him to join the development teams.
This led him to participate in the creation of the very first Tekken, initially as a balancing advisor. His unique approach and deep understanding of player expectations quickly made him indispensable. In 1997, he became the director of Tekken 3, one of the most defining entries in fighting game history.
The Architect of Tekken
Over the years, Tekken became, in many ways, Harada’s game. He directed the main installments, spin offs and related projects, while also overseeing the brand’s esports strategy. Known for his direct tone, sharp insight and iconic sunglasses, Harada became both the public face and spiritual guardian of the franchise.
In 2019, he became general producer for all Bandai Namco franchises. During this period, he encouraged experimentation, whether through VR concepts, alternative gameplay experiences or new competitive formats.
His continuous presence within the community, from small Japanese tournaments to the EVO stage, made him one of the most respected names in the industry.
The Reasons Behind a Historic Departure
At 55 years old, Harada explained that he has been reflecting on how much time he has left as a creator. Advice from Ken Kutaragi, the father of PlayStation, played a role in helping him accept this new chapter.
In truth, he had already been preparing his succession for several years by gradually passing on his creative responsibilities. For those who closely followed his evolution within Bandai Namco, this announcement is surprising, yet unsurprising at the same time.
The Future of Tekken Without Harada
The Tekken franchise now finds itself at a turning point. After more than three decades defining its philosophy, gameplay, iconic characters and narrative tone, Harada’s absence will naturally have a major impact.
However, Bandai Namco remains reassuring. Longtime producer Michael Murray, along with game director Kohei Ikeda (Nakatsu), continue to lead the project. The team has stated that they remain fully committed to the future of Tekken 8 and the installments that will follow, while honoring the creative legacy Harada established.
This transition may also bring new opportunities. Other franchises have shown that a change in leadership can revitalise a series. Street Fighter 6, developed after the departure of Yoshinori Ono, is a notable example.
A Community Both Emotional and Confident
Harada’s departure sparked a wave of tributes from players, content creators and esports figures worldwide. Influential personalities such as Kayane and Gen1us shared heartfelt messages about his legacy, authenticity and impact on the competitive scene.
While Tekken is losing its greatest ambassador, the community knows that Harada’s influence will remain embedded in every future project. His vision is part of the franchise’s DNA.
An Uncertain Yet Promising Future for Harada
Although he is not officially retiring, Harada has not yet revealed his future plans. While it is difficult to imagine him stepping away from gaming entirely, several possibilities remain open.
To commemorate the end of his Bandai Namco journey, he shared a musical mix celebrating 30 years of Tekken soundtracks, a symbolic gift for his fans.
Katsuhiro Harada’s departure is a landmark moment for the game industry. As the architect of Tekken for more than three decades, he leaves behind an unmatched legacy. But it is also an opportunity for Bandai Namco and the Tekken franchise to explore new horizons.
One chapter ends, but the story continues. With a dedicated team, a loyal community and a monumental heritage, Tekken enters a new era filled with possibilities.
